More information about tarred twines

What is tarred twine?

Typically, tarred twines are made from the organic fibres of a plant – such as jute or flax hemp.

This means they’re 100% natural and biodegradable. But aside from being environmentally friendly, it also means they boast several other useful properties. For example, they tend to be strong and durable, soft-to-the-touch and flexible, and resistant to heat and UV rays.

The protective tar proofing amplifies resistance to environmental wear and tear, bolstering the twine’s natural resistance to weather, abrasion, sunlight etc. As a result, it lasts longer than other varieties of twine – particularly if used outdoors or in harsh conditions.

What can weatherproof tarred twine be used for?

An all-purpose utility product, tarred strings are perfect for a wide range of applications.

At home, they’re commonly used for:

  • DIY projects
  • gardening and landscaping
  • making garden structures (e.g. gazebos, wigwams, pole planters)
  • tying down

We’re also told they’re an excellent rodent deterrent.

Thanks to their superior weatherproofing, tarred lines are also frequently employed in the shipping industry – where they’re used on traditional boats for whipping.
