Description

28mm Manila Rope in a 220m coil

Manila rope has been used for centuries. It is made from fibres taken from the Abaca plant, and is biodegradable yet strong and flexible. It is especially resistant to sunlight and stretching.

As it contains natural oils, Manila can withstand hot summers and cold, wet winters, so it is probably more resilient outdoors than other ropes made from natural fibres.

Uses for 28mm Manila rope include:

  • decking handrails
  • rope rails and fencing
  • natural-rope barriers and boundaries
  • gym climbing ropes
  • lawn edging
  • heritage boats
  • architectural / internal decor

The standard finish for this rope is for both the left and right ends to be taped. If you would like them to be whipped or eye-spliced please visit our 'rope ends' section.

Characteristics

It is a rich brown in colour, has a hairy texture and is easy to grip and tie knots with.

Manila behaves just like any natural rope in different weather conditions. In the wet it can swell in diameter and shrink in length. Also the stated diameter can vary slightly: For example this rope will have been measured as 28mm in the factory, but may be slightly thicker because it is at rest. This is all part of the usual properties and charm of a natural rope.

If passing through wooden posts, the holes will need to be bigger than the rope and not the same size - it's best to wait for the rope to arrive before selecting your drill bit. Watch our video for guidance and top tips.
