More About Polysteel Rope
Polysteel combines polypropylene and polyethylene to produce a tough synthetic rope with a high strength for its diameter. It is particularly well suited to outdoor and working environments where rope is repeatedly exposed to water, dirt, weather and abrasion.
Unlike natural fibre ropes, Polysteel does not rot or mildew and can be stored wet. It also retains its strength when wet and, with a density below that of water, standard Polysteel rope floats.
Key Benefits of Polysteel Rope
- Approximately 25% stronger than standard polypropylene rope
- Excellent abrasion resistance for demanding working applications
- UV resistant for prolonged outdoor use
- Retains its strength when wet
- Resistant to rot and mildew
- Can be stored wet
- Floats in water
- 3-strand construction makes it easy to splice
- Tough, durable and economical for regular commercial use
What Is Polysteel Rope Used For?
The combination of strength, abrasion resistance and resistance to water makes Polysteel particularly useful where an ordinary general-purpose polypropylene rope may not be tough enough.
Agriculture and Dairy Farming
Polysteel is widely used for dairy slurry scraper systems, as well as pulling, hauling and other agricultural applications. Its resistance to moisture, dirt and abrasion makes it well suited to the demanding conditions found around farms and agricultural machinery.
Fishing and Marine Use
Because standard Polysteel floats and does not lose strength when wet, it is a practical rope for fishing boats, workboats, mooring and anchor lines and general marine ropework.
It is also used for crab and lobster pot lines. Where a heavier rope that sits lower in the water is preferred, our Leaded Polysteel Rope incorporates lead threads to add weight and reduce buoyancy.
Forestry and Heavy-Duty Outdoor Work
The strength and hard-wearing construction of Polysteel also make it useful for hauling logs, forestry work, pulling equipment and other demanding outdoor applications where good abrasion and weather resistance are important.
Green, White or Tiger Polysteel?
Our standard Polysteel is available in green and white, while our distinctive yellow and black Tiger Polysteel provides much greater visibility. Tiger rope is particularly useful around machinery, agricultural equipment, work areas and other situations where being able to see the rope easily is an advantage.
For projects where appearance matters, our straw-coloured Synthetic Sisal Rope provides the strength and weather resistance of Polysteel with the appearance of a traditional natural fibre rope.
Polysteel or Polypropylene Rope?
Both are strong, lightweight synthetic ropes that float and resist water, but Polysteel offers greater strength and abrasion resistance. This makes it the better choice for more demanding applications involving repeated use, heavier loads or harsher working conditions.
Standard polypropylene remains an excellent economical general-purpose rope where the additional strength and durability of Polysteel are not required.
Polysteel is not designed to provide significant stretch or shock absorption. Where elasticity is an important part of the application, 3-strand Nylon Rope may be a more suitable choice.
