What is sisal twine?

Sisal twine is made from the natural fibres of the sisal plant (Agave Sisalana). It has the traditional light brown colour and slightly hairy texture associated with natural twine, with a good level of grip that makes it easy to handle and tie.

Being made from natural plant fibres, sisal twine is biodegradable and is a good choice where a natural product is preferred. It also has relatively low stretch and good resistance to sunlight, making it particularly useful for gardening, agricultural work, packaging and general tying jobs.

What are the benefits of sisal twine?

Sisal has been used for rope and twine for generations, and for many applications there is still little need to complicate things.

Sisal twine is one of those products that tends to find a home in the garden shed, workshop, warehouse or farm because there is always another use for it.

Which sisal twine should I choose?

Sisal twine is traditionally described by its number of plies and its runnage. This can look a little confusing at first, but it is quite straightforward.

For example, 3/200 sisal twine is made from three plies and has a runnage of approximately 200 metres per kilogram.

The first number therefore tells you the number of plies used to make the twine, while the second tells you approximately how many metres of twine there are per kilogram.

As a general rule, a lower runnage means a thicker, heavier twine, because fewer metres are needed to make up one kilogram. So our 3/100 sisal twine is thicker than our 3/200, even though both are made from three plies.

We stock a range from finer 2-ply twines through to heavier 3- and 4-ply versions, so you can choose according to the job rather than simply buying "a ball of string".

Choosing the right pack size

For occasional jobs, our smaller 500g ball of 3/200 sisal twine is a handy size to keep in the shed or workshop.

For regular use, we also stock larger 2.25kg balls and 4.25kg spools, while discounted multipacks offer better value where larger quantities are required.
