Discover our rope play ideas for gardens with just a few simple features, knots, and safety considerations.
Planning your garden playground
If you want to elevate your garden playground, there are a few factors worth considering, including:
-
Age range
-
Budget
-
Available space
It’s important that you also have a sound fixing point, such as a beam, a sturdy branch, or an A-frame.
Considering these variables beforehand can make the process more seamless and provide maximum fun and safety.
A rope swing
A timeless classic, rope swings offer a broad appeal, endless fun, and simplicity.
For a rope swing:
-
Choose a design you like, alongside an appropriate rope such as our synthetic hemp.
-
Attach it to a sturdy tree branch or an A-frame.
-
Add a seat by drilling a hole into a suitable piece of wood before feeding the rope through and tying a knot.
-
To ensure a safe environment, check the drop and landing. It’s also worth inspecting branch health and thickness and making sure there’s a safe landing zone.
To make it really easy, we stock ready-made swing ropes in synthetic hemp, and a range of extension and adjustment ropes in our Child’s Play range.
You can also choose from our range of swing seats in wood or plastic – traditional style or monkey swing seat.

A rope ladder
A rope ladder can be a great choice to keep your little ones entertained – perfect for climbing or accessing dens, frames, or decks.
Our made-to-order rope ladders feature 12mm synthetic hemp rope and sturdy wooden rungs for long-lasting outdoor fun.
A children’s climbing rope
A climbing rope is a great way to add adventure to a garden, and can be hung from a branch or frame, similarly to a rope ladder or a swing.
What’s more, a children’s climbing rope can improve gross motor skills and build physical strength, including upper body strength, hand-eye coordination, and grip power. They can also refine confidence, balance, and problem-solving skills.
Remember to keep a safe space below, such as a soft surface, in the event of a fall.
The best knots for hanging rope play
Selecting the right knot for your child’s rope play is extremely important, preventing jamming, slipping, or hazards. It’s important that you always check a rope carefully before it has to hold a child’s weight.
A bowline
The bowline knot can be untied easily if needed, but is secure and can hold a child’s weight – perfect for attaching a rope swing to a seat, a ring, or a carabiner.
To tie a bowline knot, simply:
-
Make a small loop near the end of the rope, leaving a long tail handy.
-
Pass the tail up through that small loop from beneath.
-
Take the tail around the back of the standing rope.
-
Feed the tail back down through the same small loop.
-
Hold the standing rope and pull the tail to tighten.
A timber hitch/round-turn
A timber hitch or a round-turn wraps around and grips the tree branch or structure to spread the load and stay secure.
-
Pass the rope right over the branch twice so you have two full wraps side by side.
-
Bring the tail across and around the main standing rope once.
-
Next, tuck the tail back under itself and around its own part two or three times, ensuring that twisting in the same direction each time.
-
Pull it snug against the branch.
