Mother and child doing rope crafts for kids

Kids’ rope crafts for the October half-term

The kids’ half-term holiday is fast-approaching, and with the return of dark nights, there’s one question currently on all parents’ minds:

How on earth will we keep them occupied?

Rope can be used to create a wide range of fun craft items and decorations. So, why not stock up on a few cords and twines this October and get creative?

Here we’ve rounded up our favourite child-friendly rope crafts.

Apologies in advance for the mess…

1. Animal-themed rope baskets

These cute ‘mouse’ rope baskets are a wonderful activity for children who love animals – and they’re relatively easy to make. All you need is a length of 6mm jute rope, a few buttons and either felt or cardboard for the eyes.

A detailed guide on how to make a rope basket can be found on our sister site, Paracords Direct. But the process is really straightforward. Just wind the rope into a tight coil, stick everything down with a strong glue, and then let the kids add their ‘animal-themed’ decorations. The ideal rope craft for a rainy day.

2. Rope pictures

Rope crafts don’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can be as easy as sticking a bit of rope onto some paper.

Take, for example, this autumn-themed tree picture. All you need is a length of jute rope and a few additional craft supplies, such as coloured pompoms or fallen leaves from the garden. It’s a simple activity. But it’ll keep them busy for hours whilst they create their ‘masterpiece’.

3. Rope rainbow

These may look quite difficult. But they’re easier than you think to put together. Here at Ropes Direct, we have a range of coloured polypropylene cords that are perfect for the job. Simply invest in the main rainbow colours – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple – cut a length of each and glue the pieces together.

Alternatively, you could invest in natural cotton rope and wrap each individual section in coloured wool. Either way, the results are very impressive!

4. Friendship bracelets

A classic rope craft for children.

Friendship bracelets are a fantastic way to while away the hours. And, again, they’re easy enough for children to make themselves – particularly if using our simple four-step guide.

We have various materials that are suitable for this activity, including cotton cord, coloured polypropylene rope and soft-touch shock cord, to name a few. So, just add a selection of these to their craft box – along with various bracelet beads and charms – and leave them to it.

5. Halloween decorations

You could help the kids to make a twig and string spider’s web. Simply take a ball of sisal twine, wrap it around the branches, and add a couple of toy spiders. Or, you could use sisal rope to create a rope pumpkin? Crumple a piece of paper into a ball and add a few rubber bands to hold it in shape. Then, wrap the rope around the circumference and stick it down with glue.

The possibilities are endless. Just let them get creative and make some crazy décor for the home.
